内容摘要：This paper estimates the impact of transcontinental railways on inland region’s trade, production, and inter-regional factor flows. Since 2011, cities in China and Europe are increasingly connected through China-Europe Railway Express, a transcontinental transportation network linking China with western Europe through Central Asia and Russia. Exploiting the staggered introduction of the network across inland rail stations in China, we find that the network increases inland trade to Europe, manufacturing production, and incentivizes reallocation of capital and labor from coast to inland. Transcontinental railways therefore contribute to the development of inland region, which tends to be less populated and less developed owing to its longer distance to coastline and higher international trade cost for ocean-borne cargos.
