嘉宾简介:何浩然,瑞典哥德堡大学经济学博士,北京师范大学经济与工商管理学院副教授、博士生导师。主要研究领域为亲社会行为、团队决策、就业市场、公共政策评估。近年来,已在国际期刊Experimental Economics、Journal of EconomicBehavior & Organization、Journal of Economic Psychology、Economics Letters、Environment andDevelopment Economics、Environment and Planning A、Journal of Forest Economics等和国内期刊《管理世界》、《经济学(季刊)》、《世界经济》等上发表多篇论文。

内容简介:Workplace flexibility is an important type of non-monetary benefits employers offer

employees. Knowing how workers value different workplace flexibility can givelight to practices that stimulate currently inactive labor. We first address this question by examining the relationship between salaries and flexibility of jobs from both employers’ and workers’ perspectives. Since it is difficult to distinguish between preferences for flexibility and productivity sorting based on observational data, we then collaborate with a Chinese online job board and use real job ads to conduct a field experiment. We study job seekers’application decisions and anticipated salary under different flexibility conditions, including no flexibility, only work timing flexibility, only work place flexibility, and both work timing and place flexibility. We find that granting timing flexibility or place flexibility significantly raises the probability of applying compared to no flexibility. Granting both timing and place flexibility further increases the probability of applying compared to only granting place flexibility. These results are driven by job seekers who are offered medium and high salaries. We also find that applicants expect to earn higher salary in jobs with timing flexibility and place flexibility, which is driven by those offered low salary.
